How to Write a Thesis

The word thesis came from a Greek word means “something put forth”.  We can also call it as an intellectual proposition. It is a compiled document showcases the research that is being done and is submitted by the students during the period of their M.tech.

The Thesis contains all the facts and figures, arguments and suggestions, experiments and results and all other stuff they get to know during their research. The extent of the project depends on the nature of topic, in-depth research and rules and regulations of different universities. Thesis writing is based on the following three areas:

  • Topic
  • Research
  • Synopsis
  • Style
  • Presentation
  • Conclusion

Choice of the topic

The initial step to begin with the M.Tech thesis writing is to choose an intuitive and easy topic to conduct the research thoroughly and reliably. Choosing a topic can be a daunting task as students have to pick an original and relevant topic which should also serve its purpose in other languages too.

By following certain guidelines, one can easily make a decision about the topics in different fields.

If you want to deliver compelling thesis, then you need to collect different ideas either online or from books. Try to get as many ideas as you can. You never know, you may discover a unique idea from the common topics. You can also mingle two topics and generate a different idea that can really bring a change in your thesis. In short, keep on exploring to discover, learn and perform.

It’s usual to get many topics while looking for the perfect one. It’s highly a confusing state of mind where we have options but the choice is not easy to make. Why not make it easy by evaluating each and every topic on the grounds of feasibility, technicality, and usage.

It’s a termination stage where you finally need to lift up from topics that you have thoroughly evaluated and pick the best one while leaving the others.

As thesis is bulky in nature, the students need to make sure about data generation, thorough evaluation, and proper compilation. Support your data with facts, solutions, arguments, and discoveries to make your thesis more interesting and productive. The topic to be chosen should be such that you have some previous basic knowledge about that topic. It should not be the case that my friend is writing on this topic and I should also follow him. This will not do any good.

While choosing a topic you should not divert from your core area of study. Choosing a topic from electronics stream if you are from computer science stream is completely illogical. So, take special care of this point while making a selection of topic. You can follow the following steps while coming up with a good thesis topic:

  • Check your requirements along with terms and conditions laid down by the college or university.
  • Decide whether you want to work on a completely new topic or work on existing one.
  • The topic should be such that it is able to define a problem with an appropriate solution.
  • Do a deep research on available research papers and articles.
  • List down ideas on a paper and shortlist some of them.
  • From the shortlisted topics, choose that one on which you can write something.
  • Take the help of your mentor.

Synopsis

Great! You have your topic now.

Selection of the topic is followed by base paper implementation. It means grasping the knowledge from the amount of work that has already been put into your selected topic.

Next is the preparation of synopsis report. Remember, a synopsis is an introduction to your report. It must be explicative and well defined as it defines your aims and objectives of the technical research of the topic. Make your synopsis report more appealing with a catchy title that leaves the reader with no ambiguity. The main purpose of the synopsis is to plan about how you are going to fulfill your research goals. It is a short outline of your proposed thesis work. A thesis synopsis should include the following information:

Background detail

Background detail includes the problem definition, goals and objectives of the proposed thesis work and how it will contribute to the existing work. You have to lay down the problems which has encouraged you to provide a solution to these problems through your thesis.

Make a brief report of what makes you pick this topic. Back it with the brief information as it will pull more interest in your research. Conduct an in-depth research on the topic and cull out queries and questions that are related to the same. Find their answers and make a separate section of FAQ’S in your synopsis report. It will show your dedication, focus, and interest towards the topic.

Outline

In this case, you have to give an outline of what all data and requirements you have to carry out your work. You have to specify your target audience for whom you are writing this thesis.

When it comes to “HOW”, you should mention about the procedure, tools, techniques, and criteria on which your thesis stands. Take the advantage of facts, figures, graphs, formulae and any survey to make it more informative and engaging. If you have any new ideas regarding the research or solutions to the pending problems then explain your propositions but make sure to pitch every idea with relevant examples to give a clear overview to the supervisor.

Time Plan

You have to give a rough time plan to describe how you are going to divide your work according to time. The time plan should be such that you will be able to complete your work before the deadline.

Reference

List down all the major references. The reference list should support your work. The reference list should be able to demonstrate the methodological way of your work.

The length of the synopsis can range from two to five pages but it all depends upon your institution. You should submit your synopsis report before the submission of your final report.

A synopsis is followed by base paper implementation where students make a deep assessment of the previous research papers and prepare a review paper. This unveils those areas where the more research is needed to be done. You will also get to know about the untouched parts of their topic that are still needed to unfold.

Research

It’s time to start with the research. The more you will explore, the more you will be able to get into the skin of the topic. Make sure to touch every aspect of the topic and come up with significant findings. The successful completion of this step results into many inferences and students are drawn nearer to the documentation of thesis.

After understanding the conclusions in an intelligent way, elaborate all points independently on the grounds of future scope of the topic. At the end, supplement your thesis with discrete appendices which provide complete information to draw a reference. It is the section where you can include information that is vital to mention but can’t be incorporated into the main content. The end page includes all citations and references from which you have drawn facts to support your thesis.

Style

The style of your thesis writing also matters a lot. The style of writing pattern should be formal. The text should be clear and precise with no grammatical errors. The way of writing should be formal. Rather than writing long sentences, focus on short sentences and phrases. Don’t write long paragraphs like these look boring and unimpressive.

If possible try to write in points rather than lengthy paragraphs. The points listed should look genuine with facts and arguments.

Presentation

Proper presentation of your work is also essential. It reflects the way how effectively you have presented your work. If there are any diagrams, these should be presented neatly. Don’t spend too much time on designing and beautification of diagrams. Utilize this time in making clear explanations, examining arguments, and checking for errors in the work. Elaborate essential points with facts and figures as these convey the idea more clearly.

Also, take special care of length and quality of work.

Conclusion

Work is complete, now how to conclude? A good conclusion will summarise all the work you have done. You should submit your thesis before the deadline. Remember your deadline and utilize full time to make your thesis as interactive as possible. Go for proofreading to find the underlying errors and mistakes that left unnoticed while you were working on the thesis. Also, make sure that all the work is in accordance with the required thesis format. Don’t forget to include an appendix.
